A native of Katy, Texas, Mooney will wear his usual #30 for Saturday’s contest and will play for former Army head coach Bobby Ross as a member of the East squad. Ross coached Mooney for two seasons while he was the head coach at the Academy before Ross retired from active coaching following the 2006 campaign. Gene Stallings will coach the West team.
The 23rd Army player to play in the East-West Shrine game, Mooney rushed for 1,339 yards in his lone season as a starting fullback. A 5-foot-10, 247-pound Management major, Mooney gained 229 yards against Eastern Michigan and picked up 207 at Rice on the way to establishing the rushing mark.
One of Army’s four team captains, Mooney became the first Army player since Carlton Jones in 2003 to rush for at least 200 yards in a game twice this season. He also posted five 100-yard rushing efforts en route to surpassing Mike Mayweather’s previous single season school standard. Michael Wallace had been the most recent Army player to accomplish that feat, topping the century mark on five occasions in 2000. Mooney slipped past Mayweather atop Army’s single season rushing chart on the final play of the Navy game, besting the former standard established in 1990 by one yard.
Mooney was also honored as the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week.
The Katy, Texas, native has also been recognized as one of four nominees for the AT&T All-America Player of the Week.
The Black Death Award was started in 1988 under head coach Jim Young. Brock reinstated the award, and has given it twice during his two years on the Army sideline. The first was presented to Lt. Col. Greg Gadson on his visit to West Point prior to the 2007 campaign.
